To demystify this misconception, we engaged in a conversation with Ian Millar, a Senior Lecturer in Hospitality Technology at EHL, to explore how AI can be a catalyst for innovation and growth for SMEs in the hospitality sector.

Embracing AI in the Hospitality Sector

PwC has proclaimed AI as a “$15.7 trillion game changer”. Although the hospitality industry is still in the early stages of AI adoption, it is crucial to understand how to effectively leverage this technology. AI’s legal and ethical implications are complex, but its potential to expedite tasks and enhance efficiency for the hospitality workforce is clear.

While the human element remains indispensable in hospitality, AI is already streamlining back-office functions such as staff scheduling, financial statements, inventory management, and pricing strategies. In content creation, AI can swiftly generate marketing content, social media posts, and even design materials, breaking language barriers with ease. AI’s role in enhancing hospitality performance is undeniable.

Chatbots and virtual assistants, despite their robotic nature, are being utilized to handle routine inquiries, bookings, and customer service. Although they may not always provide nuanced responses, they free up staff time for other customer experience-enhancing tasks.

AI algorithms analyze demand patterns and real-time data to optimize pricing strategies, enabling hotels to adjust rates and promotions for maximum revenue and occupancy. These algorithms also use guest data to personalize experiences, tailoring services and activities to individual preferences.

In terms of maintenance, AI systems predict potential issues before they arise, allowing hotel managers to proactively schedule repairs, minimize downtime, and maintain optimal facility performance.

However, for SMEs, the high level of AI analysis requires careful consideration of business needs, goals, workflows, and customer experience objectives. The cost of implementing technology is a significant barrier for SMEs looking to adopt AI.
